Diabetes is a metabolic disease in which the person has high blood glucose, either because insulin production is insufficient or because the body's cells do not respond appropriately to insulin. Food that we eat is broken down into glucose which is a form of sugar in the blood and is the main source of fuel for our bodies. We all need this source of energy for our metabolic activity and bodily function. When food is digested, the glucose makes its way into our bloodstream and our cells use the glucose for energy and growth and the glucose cannot enter the cells without the presence of insulin.
